ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) netted a game-high 21 points to lead the Cougars to a 75-57 win over North Division leader Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 6-14 overall and 6-7 in the CACC, while the Chargers drop to 9-11 and 7-4 in conference play.
The teams battled through a competitive opening quarter as Caldwell netted the first four points of the game. Dominican pulled ahead 19-15 late in the opening quarter and the Chargers held a 22-20 lead.
Caldwell broke the game open in the second quarter as they outscored the Chargers 25-5. The Cougars shot 50%, while holding Dominican to 16.7% from the field. Lennon and graduate
Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) each scored seven points in the quarter as the Cougars pushed ahead 42-27 at halftime.
The Chargers rallied back to start the second as they closed the gap to 46-40 midway through the third quarter. Caldwell answered with a 9-3 run to push their lead back to double digits. Junior
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) drained a triple in the run. Lennon totaled six points and capped the run with two free throws with 1:15 left in the quarter for a 55-43 lead. Caldwell held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Lennon led the way with 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Smaldone totaled 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Lebron shot 4-for-7 from downtown as she finished with 14 points and three steals. Freshman
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) posted eight points and four rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, February 9 as they host Chestnut Hill College at 2 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will be "Super Saturday" as Caldwell Athletic welcomes back its alumni to campus.
