Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) and freshman
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) each recorded double-doubles as the Cougars defeated Felician University 79-72 in overtime in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 3-8 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons fall to 2-8 and 2-1 in conference play.
Caldwell jumped out to a 14-5 lead as senior
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) netted six points over the first six minutes of the game. Felician rallied back as they took a 24-22 lead early in the second quarter.
The Cougars went on a 16-6 run powered by nine points from Dits over a six-minute stretch to retake the lead. Caldwell pulled ahead 38-30 with under a minute to play and led 39-34 at halftime.
Felician battled back to start the second half as they took a 45-39 lead midway through the third quarter. The Cougars closed the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a three-point lead into the final quarter. Junior
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) drained a triple, while Smaldone added six points in the run to give Caldwell a 56-53 lead.
Caldwell pushed ahead by six points at 62-56 early in the fourth quarter but the Golden Falcons rallied to tie the score at 64. The teams matched points down the stretch as the game headed to overtime tied at 69.
In the extra period, Felician drained a pair of free throws to take the early lead. Smaldone connected on back-to-back hoops in the paint to put Caldwell in the lead 73-70 with just over two minutes remaining. The Cougars hit four free throws in the final minute to hold off Felician.
Smaldone recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists. Dits posted her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards. Freshman
Tamrin Henderson (Woodbridge, Va.) turned in a career-day with 18 points and seven rebounds. Lennon tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Caldwell returns to the court on Saturday, January 5 as they host Georgian Court University in a CACC contest at 1 pm.
