CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team lost a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games to Post University as the Cougars wrapped up their home schedule for 2018. The Eagles edged the Cougars in the opener 11-7 and took the nightcap 15-4.
The Cougars fall to 7-37 overall and 7-23 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 26-18 and 18-10 in conference play.
In the opener, Post pulled ahead 8-0 over the first five innings. Caldwell got on the board in their half of the fifth as sophomore
Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) drove in a run with a single.
The Cougars battled back in the sixth as senior
Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, N.J.) tripled in a pair of runs. Senior
Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) drove in DeSanti with a groundout to cut the score to 8-4.
In the seventh, senior
Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, N.J.) drove in a run with a ground out. Caldwell added a pair of runs in the eighth on an error to cut the score to 9-7. The Eagles tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth and held off the Cougars in the final inning.
Freshman
Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) started and took the loss as he went 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.
In the nightcap, the Eagles got off to an early lead with 11 runs in the first inning. Post added four runs in the third.
Caldwell got on the board in the later innings as sophomore
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) singled in Jeannette in the fourth for their first run of the game.
In the fifth, senior
William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) singled with one out and scored on a Herrera homerun. Caldwell loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Sophomore
Dallas McPherson (Livingston, N.J.) dropped in a single to score a run for the Cougars.
Senior
Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, N.J.) took the loss as he pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on seven hits.
The Cougars conclude their 2018 season as they travel to Dominican College for a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, May 2 at noon. The games will be played at PCU Park in Pomona, NY.
