Baseball Comes Up Short to Post

WATERBURY, Conn.- The Caldwell University baseball team came up short in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Post University. The Eagles won the opener 15-10 and edged the Cougars in the nightcap 3-2.

The Cougars fall to 4-30 and 4-20 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 18-16 and 10-8 in conference play.

Post took the lead with three runs in the first inning. Caldwell rallied in the fourth as senior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a walk. Junior Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drew a walk, while junior Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.) singled to score Bernstein to cut the score to 3-1.

The Eagles pushed ahead 7-1 with four runs in the fourth inning but Caldwell added two runs in the fifth. Senior Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) and Bernstein walked with one out. Marino singled to score Marinello, while Bernstein came around to score later in the inning on a passed ball.

Post pushed ahead 11-3 but Caldwell battled back with a seven-run seventh inning. They loaded the bases as Bernstein and sophomore Jack Zosulis (East Hanover, N.J.) both singled, while Marino walked. Senior Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) doubled in a pair of runs with Goldman advancing to third and Marino scoring later in the inning on a wild pitch. Senior William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch that allowed Goldman to score.

Senior Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, N.J) singled in Levier, while Marinello and Bernstein walked to load the bases. Zosulis drew a walk to force in a run, while Marino was hit by a pitch to cut the score to 11-10.

Senior Daniel Gregor (Monroe, N.J.) started as he tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (one earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts to fall to 0-5.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game two as they scored twice in the opening inning. Caldwell got a run back in the third as Parente singled to start the inning. He moved to second on a ground out and third on a fly out. Marinello reached base on an error that allowed Parente to score the first Caldwell run of the game.

The Cougars rallied to tie the score in the fifth as Goldman led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Goldman reached third on a ground out, while Levier grounded out to score Goldman. The Eagles pushed across a run in the sixth and stymied a Cougar rally in the seventh to take game two.
