PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Caldwell University women's lacrosse sophomore
Arden Kassaleh (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and senior
Pamela Schenck (East Moriches, N.Y.) each matched program game records as the Cougars locked up a spot in the postseason with a 23-13 win over Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
Kassaleh set the program game record with 13 draw controls and tied her previous individual game record with eight goals, while Schenck tied the program record for assists in a game with five.
The Cougars clinch a berth in the CACC Championship for a third straight season. The program, established in 2014, finished as the #5 seed in 2016 and 2017. The final seeds and playoffs matchups will be determined after the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday.
Caldwell improves to 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the CACC, while the Tigers drop to 3-10 and 3-5 in conference play.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead as Kassaleh netted the first goal of the game. Junior
Maryellen McCarthy (Levittown, N.Y.) scored twice and assisted on a goal by senior
Pamela Schenck (East Moriches, N.Y.) to help Caldwell build a 4-2 lead with 20:33 left in the first half. Holy Family battled back as they netted three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead midway through the half.
Kassaleh and freshman
Samantha Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) answered for Caldwell with back-to-back goals to put the Cougars back in front 6-5. The Tigers tied the score at six with just over two minutes to play. Caldwell closed the half with three goals over the final two minutes. Kassaleh scored twice, while McCarthy added a goal and Schenck registered two assists as the Cougars led 9-6 at halftime.
Caldwell pulled away early in the second half as Kassaleh netted four goals in the half. Junior
Jessica Collum (Wayne, N.J.) added a pair of goals, while junior
Rachel Lucia (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), McCarthy and Murphy netted goals early in the half as Caldwell pulled ahead 19-9 at the 19:37 mark.
Murphy tallied a pair of goals down the stretch, while McCarthy and Schenck each netted goals over the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Junior
Nancy Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) recorded nine saves in the win. Kassaleh tied her program record with eight goals along with a program game record 13 draw controls. She added four ground balls in the win. Murphy added five goals, three assists, four draw controls and three ground balls, while Schenck totaled two goals and five assists. McCarthy posted five goals and one assist along with three ground balls, while Collum finished with two goals, two assists and three ground balls. Lucia tallied three caused turnovers, three draw controls and three draw controls.
The Cougars host Nyack College on Saturday, April 21 for a CACC contest at 10 am at Essex Valley Field. Prior to the game, the program's three seniors will be recognized for the contributions to the team.
