NEWARK, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Bloomfield College. The Bears took the opener 14-2 and won the nightcap 9-7.
The Cougars fall to 2-25 overall and 2-14 in the CACC, while Bears improve to 9-12-1 and 4-6 in conference play.
In the opener, senior
Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Bernstein singled to lead off the seventh inning and eventually reached third base. Bernstein scored the first Cougar run later in the inning.
Caldwell added another run in the eighth as they loaded the bases with two outs. DeSanti, senior
Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) and freshman
Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.) each singled to load the bases. Sophomore
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) drew a walk to force in a run.
Senior
Daniel Gregor (Monroe, N.J.) took the loss to fall to 0-4 on the season. He tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and struck out five.
Bloomfield took the early lead in the nightcap with three runs in the opening inning. Caldwell battled back with two runs in the top of the second as they loaded the bases. Parente led off with a single, while DeSanti reached on a fielder's choice and Zosulis singled. Parente scored on an error, while Zosulis scored on a wild pitch to cut the score to 3-2.
The Bears added four runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 7-2. The Cougars rallied over the next two innings to tie the score at seven.
In the third, Bernstein singled with one out and moved to second on a balk. Bernstein advanced to third on a groundout and scored later in the inning on an error. Senior
William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) led off the third inning with a single, while sophomore
Dustin Walicky (Belleville, N.J.) walked. Both runners moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt with Levier scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gregor. Bernstein drew walk, while senior
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) doubled to score Walicky. Parente tied the game with a two-run single.
Bloomfield broke the game open in the sixth as they pushed across a pair of runs to take a 9-7 lead.
Junior
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) took the loss in relief to fall to 0-1, allowing two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The Cougars travel to Jefferson for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at noon.
