CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team came up short in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Dominican College in their home opener. The Cougars came up short 4-3 in the opener and fell 8-5 in the nightcap.
The Cougars fall to 0-15 overall and 0-6 in the CACC, while the Chargers improve to 4-15 and 3-0 in conference play.
Dominican struck first as they scored three runs in the opening inning. The Chargers added a run in the sixth inning to push their lead to 4-0.
Caldwell rallied with three runs in the seventh inning. Senior
Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) singled to score Marinello and put the Cougars on the board. Sophomore
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) followed with a single, while senior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to score Herrera to slice the score to 4-2. Junior
Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in Bernstein later in the inning on a single.
Sophomore
Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts to fall to 0-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Chargers took the early lead with three runs in the first inning. Dominican added four runs in the second and one in the third for an 8-0 lead. Senior
Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, N.J.) singled to start the inning, while Marinello reached on a fielder's choice. Zosulis walked to load the bases with two outs. Bernstein cleared the bases with a double to cut the score to 8-3.
Caldwell added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as junior
Quintin Quartararo (Lakewood, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice. Marinello singled and advanced to second on the third, while Quartararo moved to third. Zosulis singled to center to drive in both runners to slice the score to 8-5.
Freshman
Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) got the start as he pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits to fall to 0-2. Sophomore
Nick Cerbone (Bayonne, N.J.) tossed 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. Sophomore
Raymond Ramos (Bloomfield, N.J.) pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, while senior
Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, N.J.) and junior
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) retired the only batters they faced.
The Cougars host Queens College on Thursday, March 29 at 3 pm at the Kiwanis Oval.
