Baseball Falls on Day Three of Florida Trip

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Caldwell University baseball team dropped a pair of games on day three of their Florida road trip. The Cougars lost to American International College 10-5 and fell to Southern Connecticut St. University 11-7 to close out day three.
 
In the opener against American International, the Cougars got on the board in the second inning as junior Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch. The Yellow Jackets pulled even with a run in the second inning.
 
Caldwell added a run in the third inning as sophomore Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) singled in a run to put the Cougars ahead 2-1. They added two runs in the fourth inning as sophomore Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) ripped a two-run double for a 4-1 lead.
 
American International took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. The Yellow Jackets added three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.
 
Caldwell got a run in the ninth as senior Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led off with a triple. Marino lifted a sacrifice fly to score Goldman.
 
Senior Daniel Gregor (Monroe, N.J.) tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out four. Graduate Zach Endersby (Caldwell, N.J.) pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit, while sophomore Nick Cerbone (Bayonne, N.J.) allowed one run in 2/3 of an inning. Freshman Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) came on for the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
 
In the second of the day, the Cougars got on the board in the second inning as Goldman and Marino reached base on singles. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Goldman scored on a passed ball.
 
The Owls rallied back as they scored three in their half of the second inning. Southern Connecticut added three runs in the third and one in the fourth for a 7-1 lead.
 
The Cougars rallied back in the fifth inning as Marino and senior William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) drew walks to start the inning. Junior Quintin Quartararo (Lakewood, N.J.) singled to load the bases. Senior Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) drove in two runs with a single to cut the score to 7-3.
 
Senior Rob DeSanti (Barneget, N.J.) drove in Quartararo with a groundout. Senior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) blasted his first homerun of the season to cut the score to 7-6. The Cougars weren't finished in the inning as Goldman doubled with outs and scored on a single by senior Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, N.J.) to tie the game at seven.
 
The Owls took the lead in the seventh with a run and added three runs in the eighth inning.
 
Sophomore Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) tossed three innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Junior Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Sophomore Raymond Ramos (Bloomfield, N.J.) took the loss as he went 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. Freshman Anthony Trano (Moonachie, N.J.) retired the lone batter he faced, while senior Chris Cerf (Ramsey, N.J.) allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 of an inning. Freshman Thomas Darling (Succasunna, N.J.) allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning.
 
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, March 13 as they take the University of New Haven and Post University at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana, Florida.
