CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior
Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.) netted 14 points as the Cougars was edged 68-67 by Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars fall to 11-12 overall and 8-6 in the CACC, while the Chargers improve to 15-7 and 9-4 in conference play.
Dominican scored the first five points of the game and pulled ahead by 20-10 at the 12:20 mark of the opening half. Caldwell closed the gap to seven points following a three-point play by sophomore
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands).
The Chargers extended their lead to as much as 17 points at 33-16 with 7:20 remaining in the half. Caldwell rallied back over the final seven minutes as they trailed 41-30 at halftime.
Dominican maintained a double-digit lead early in the second half as they led 51-36 at the 14:47 mark. The Chargers held a 57-45 lead near the midway point of the half before the Cougars rallied back.
Caldwell used a 22-9 run over a nine-minute stretch that vaulted them into the lead in the final minute of play. Sophomore
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) totaled nine points in the run, while Lutterman chipped in four points. Dorn totaled seven points and capped the run with a fast-break lay-up with 16.8 seconds left in the game to put Caldwell in the lead at 67-66.
Dominican connected on a pair of free throws with 9.8 seconds left in the game that proved to be the difference. The Cougars had a final opportunity that missed the mark as time expired.
Dorn totaled 14 points, three rebounds and four assists for the Cougars. Covington chipped in 14 points, while Lutterman finished with 13 points and four boards. Sophomore
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) totaled 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior
Ahmad Harrison (Newark, N.J.) posted five points, seven rebounds and three assists, while freshman
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) recorded six points, three boards and two steals.
The Cougars travel to Chestnut Hill College for a CACC contest on Saturday, February 10 at 3 pm.
