PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) totaled 18 points as the Cougars held off Holy Family University 65-60 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 18-4 on the season and 11-2 in the CACC, while the Tigers fall to 7-14 and 6-7 in conference play.
Holy Family got off to a quick start as they scored the first 12 points of the game. The Cougars rallied back as senior
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) drained a triple and added a lay-up. Drogsler converted a three-point play as Caldwell cut the score to 14-8 late in the opening quarter.
The Tigers extended their lead to 10 points at 18-8 with just over a minute to play. The Cougars used an 18-5 run that stretched into the second quarter to take a three-point lead. Drogsler and junior
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) each drained triples to bring the Cougars back. Drogsler scored nine points to help Caldwell take a 26-23 lead with 3:47 left in the second quarter. The teams traded points over the final three minutes with the Cougars leading 30-27 at halftime.
Caldwell extended their lead to six points midway through the third quarter. Lennon's three-pointer at the 5:45 mark gave the Cougars a 40-34 lead. The Tigers answered as they pull evened at 42 with 2:27 left in the quarter.
The Cougars scored the next eight points to pull ahead 50-42 early in the fourth quarter. Holy Family got as close as one point down the stretch but Caldwell was able to keep the Tigers at bay the rest of the way.
Drogsler led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) totaled 16 points, seven boards, four assists and three steals. Kelty posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Lennon chipped in eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Cougars return to the Newman Center as they host Dominican College on Wednesday, February 7 in a CACC contest at 5:30 pm.
