CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University men's basketball sophomore
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) tallied 14 points as the Cougars fell to Goldey-Beacom College 85-76 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars fall to 8-11 overall and 5-5 in the CACC, while the Lightning improve to 11-8 and 7-3 in conference play.
Caldwell scored the first 10 points of the game powered by three-pointers from junior
Ahmad Harrison (Newark, N.J.) and sophomore
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa.). The Cougars pushed their lead to 11 points midway through the half at 24-13 with 7:34 to play.
Goldey-Beacom rallied back late in the half as they took a 27-26 lead with two free throws at the 2:58 mark. The Lightning led by as much as seven points at 34-27 with 1:25 remaining in the half. Caldwell battled back late as sophomore
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) hit two from the line with just over a minute to play. Covington drained a late triple as the Cougars trailed 34-32 at halftime.
The Cougars battled back early in the second half as senior
Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y) tied the game with a lay-up. Sophomore
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) put the Cougars back in the lead at 40-39 with 16:22 to play as he scored in the paint.
The Lightning responded as they extended to a four-point lead at 49-45 at the 12:18 mark. Caldwell pulled even with a pair of free throws as Dorn and freshman
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) tied the score at 49 near the midway point of the half.
Goldey-Beacom rallied back as they pushed ahead by 10 points at 71-61 with 4:57 left in the game. The Cougars cut the score to six points at 77-71 with a Dorn trifecta at the 1:26 mark. The Lightning connected on six free throws down the stretch to take the win.
Covington led the way with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Lutterman chipped in 13 points and two boards. Harrison totaled 12 points and two assists, while Dorn tallied 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Johnson-Alford posted 11 points and five rebounds.
The Cougars travel to Felician University for a CACC North Division clash on Wednesday, January 24 at 8 pm.
