NEWARK, N.J.- Caldwell University baseball junior
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) homered and knocked in four runs as the Cougars split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College. Caldwell took the opener 8-4, while the Bears won the nightcap 5-2.
Caldwell stands at 8-17 overall and 5-11 in the CACC, while the Bears move to 12-10 and 8-3 in conference play.
The Cougars struck first as junior
Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) led off the game with a single. Marinello moved to second on a ground out and scored the first run of the game on double by senior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.). Freshman
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bernstein to give Caldwell a 2-0 lead.
Bloomfield tied the game with two runs on the first inning but Caldwell answered with a run in the second. Junior
Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk, while sophomore
Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled with one out. Junior
Rob DeSanti (Barneget, N.J.) reached on an error as Jeannette scored to put Caldwell ahead 3-2.
The Cougars added three runs in the fifth inning as junior
Daniel Gregor (Monroe, N.J.) led off the inning with a single. DeSanti singled with one out with put runners at first and second. Goldman blasted a three-run homerun to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Bears battled back with two runs in the fifth inning but the Cougars added a couple insurance runs in the seventh. Caldwell loaded the bases with two outs as Jeannette double and Gregor and Marino drew walks. DeSanti drew a walk to force in a run, while Marinello singled in a run.
Senior
Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, N.J.) turned in a complete game effort as he allowed four runs (one earned) on nine hits and struck out four to even his record at 2-2.
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning. Bloomfield broke through with four runs to take the lead. Caldwell rallied in the fifth as Gregor and Marino led off with back-to-back singles. They moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt with Gregor scoring on a Marinello ground out. Goldman singled to score Marino as Caldwell cut the score to 4-2.
The Bears added a run in the fifth to push ahead 5-2. Caldwell got runners on base in their final two at-bats but were unable to add runs as Bloomfield took game two 5-2.
Senior
Zach Endersby (Caldwell, N.J.) fell to 0-2 as he pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Freshman
Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout. Sophomore
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and struck out two.
The Cougars travel to Molloy College on Tuesday, April 11 for a non-conference game at 4 pm.
