#16 Softball Closes out the Regular Season with a Sweep over Queens on Senior Day

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University softball senior Lauren Frye (Jupiter, Fla.) went 6-for-8 with four runs scored as the #16 Cougars swept a non-conference doubleheader over Queens College on Senior Day. Caldwell won both games by a score of 8-1.
 
The Cougars finish the regular season with a 40-13 record. Caldwell reaches the 40-win mark for the first time since the 2014 season when they went 45-9. The Knights end their season at 13-17.
 
In the opener, Caldwell took the lead in the third inning as sophomore Katie Nichols (Acworth, Ga.) singled to lead off the inning. Senior Amy Hickman (Jackson, N.J.) reached on an error to put runners at first and third. Frye singled home Nichols for the first run of the game. Junior Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) singled in the second run of the inning for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Cougars loaded the bases in the fifth as Hickman reached on a fielder's choice. Frye and Monasseri followed with singles to load the bases. Sophomore Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) singled in two runs, while freshman Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added a run on a fielder's choice.
 
Queens got a run back in the sixth but Caldwell tacked on three runs in their half of the inning. Freshman Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.), senior Kate Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Hickman singled with one out to load the bases. Frye drove in a run with a single, while Testa added a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-1.
 
Senior pitcher Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J.) struck out six in 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits to improve to 25-4 on the season.
 
In the nightcap, Caldwell got on the board in the opener inning as Frye singled and stole second. Testa ripped a double to score Frye for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars added three in the third as Hickman and Frye singled to start the inning. Monasseri drove in both runners with a double. Junior Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning as Caldwell led 4-0.
 
In the fourth, freshman Daniela Solis (Wilmington, Del.) led off with a single. Monasseri doubled in Solis for a 5-0 lead. Queens rallied in the fifth as they scored a run to cut the score to 5-1.
 
Caldwell answered in their half of the fifth as sophomore Hannah Polak (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) singled to start the inning. Silva doubled in Polak, while Solis ripped a triple to score Silva. The Cougars loaded the bases in the sixth as Polak lifted a sacrifice fly for Caldwell.
 
Freshman Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) improved to 11-6 on the season as she tossed a complete game. She allowed one run on six hits, while striking out two.
 
Prior to game one, the Cougars honored its four graduating seniors that include Hogan, Hickman, Frye and Ponto.
 
The Cougars are the top seed in this week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships, which will be hosted on the campus of Georgian Court University. The #1 Cougars will face #8 Post University on Thursday, May 4 at 10 am at Field #1.
