#15 Softball Blasts Pair of Grand Slams to Defeat Goldey-Beacom; Advance in Winner’s Bracket

LAKEWOOD, N.J.- The #15 Caldwell University softball team blasted two grand slams as the Cougars defeated Goldey-Beacom 13-4 in five innings to advance in the winner's bracket in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament.
 
The top seeded Cougars improve to 42-13, while the #5 seed Lightning fall to 17-31on the season.
 
Caldwell jumped out to the early lead as they scored seven runs in the opening inning. Senior Amy Hickman (Jackson, N.J.) drew a walk and stole second, while senior Lauren Frye (Jupiter, Fla.) singled. Junior Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) reached on an error to load the bases. Sophomore Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) blasted a grand slam homerun as the Cougars took a 4-0 lead.
 
The Cougars weren't finished in the inning as freshman Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) singled to continue the rally. Freshman Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) reached base on an error. Junior Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) doubled home Rini, while Frye singled up the middle to add two more runs.
 
Goldey-Beacom rallied in the second as they scored a pair of runs to cut the score to 7-2. Testa drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a ground out. Silva singled to drive in Testa to extend the score to 8-2.
 
Caldwell added four in the third inning as junior Katelyn Johnson (Denville, N.J.) and Hickman drew back-to-back walks. Frye reached on an infield single to load the bases. Monasseri blasted her conference-leading 10th homerun of the season, the second grand slam of the game for the Cougars.
 
The Lightning added two runs in the fourth but Caldwell answered in their half of the inning. Sophomore Demitria Kitrinos (Skillman, N.J.) reached base on an error to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a Hickman single. Frye hit a sacrifice fly to score Kitrinos.
 
Senior Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J.) continued her mastery in the pitching circle as she tossed four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and registers seven punch outs. With the win, Ponto improves to 27-4 on the season as she ties the program single season win record set by Corinne Reiser in 2004.
 
Caldwell takes on #3 Dominican College on Friday, May 4 at 1 pm in the winner's bracket game of the CACC Championship at Georgian Court University.
