CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University Baseball team honored its graduating seniors during its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against #16 Felician University. The Golden Falcons took the opener 7-1 and won the nightcap 10-4.
Caldwell falls to 12-26 overall and finish conference play at 6-16. The Golden Falcons 31-10 and finish first in the CACC with a 20-2 record.
The Cougars struck first in the opener as senior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) led off the fourth inning with a single. He came around to score later in the inning on a single by freshman
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.).
Felician took the lead with three runs in the sixth and added four in the seventh. Freshman
Michael Hess (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) tossed six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out three. Sophomore
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while freshman
Jason Salva (West Haverstraw, N.Y.) finished out the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits.
In the nightcap, Felician broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as they pushed across four runs. Senior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a double. Junior
William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) singled home Bernstein to cut the score to 4-1.
The Golden Falcons added a run in the fifth but Caldwell rallied in their half of the inning. Rivera doubled with one out. Freshman
Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) blasted a two-run homerun as the Cougars closed the gap to 5-3.
Felician added four runs in the sixth inning and tacked on a run in the seventh. Rivera led off the inning with a ground-rule double in his final at-bat at home in a Caldwell uniform. Bernstein drove in the run later in the inning on a fielder's choice.
Senior
Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, N.J.), pitching in his final home game, tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out one. Junior
Joshua Caba (Belleville, N.J.) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Freshman
Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) tossed the final two innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout.
The Cougars close out the 2017 season as they travel to Pace University on Wednesday, May 3 at 3:30 pm.
