Bernstein Drives in Four Runs as Baseball Sweeps Post

WATERBURY, Conn.- Caldwell University baseball senior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked in four runs as the Cougars swept a doubleheader against Post University. Caldwell took the opener 7-3 and completed the sweep with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.
 
The Cougars improve to 10-18 overall, while the Eagles fall to 9-17-1.
 
In the opener, Caldwell got on the board in the third inning as junior Rob Desanti (Barneget, N.J.) singled with one out. Junior Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) drew a walk, while junior Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) singled home DeSanti with the first run of the game. Bernstein singled to drive in a run and stole second. Freshman Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) singled in Goldman, while Bernstein scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.).
 
Post battled back with three runs in the fifth inning but Caldwell tacked on three runs in the seventh. DeSanti singled to lead off the inning, while Marinello followed with a walk. The runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Bernstein came up with the big hit as he singled in two runs to extend the lead to 6-3. Bernstein moved to third on an error and scored on a Rivera sacrifice fly.
 
Junior Justin Picinic (River Vale, N.J.) improved to 2-2 on the season as he tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and struck out two. Sophomore Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) picked up his first save of the season as he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings.
 
Post took the early lead in the nightcap with one run on the second inning and added three runs in the fourth inning.
 
The Cougars rallied with five runs in the fifth inning. DeSanti drew a walk, while freshman Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) singled. Marinello singled in DeSanti, while Goldman reached in an infield single to load the bases. Bernstein drew a walk to force in a run, while Rivera tied the score at 4-4 with a two run single. Bernstein came around to score on an error to put Caldwell up 5-4.
 
Caldwell added a run in the sixth as Herrera singled with one out and stole second. Goldman doubled in Herrera for a 6-4 lead. The Cougars added three in the ninth as Rivera led off with a double and stole third. Junior Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, N.J.) tripled in Rivera, while sophomore Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added to the Cougars lead with a single. Marinello added an RBI single later in the inning for Caldwell.
 
On the mound, freshman Jack Anderson (Nyack, N.Y.) tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while striking out four. Junior Joshua Caba (Belleville, N.J.) earned the win in relief to improve to 2-3 on the season. Caba pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.
 
The Cougars return to the diamond as they host Nyack College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 at 3 pm at the Kiwanis Oval.
