Ponto Tosses Complete Game as Softball Sweeps Wilmington

NEW CASTLE, Del.- Caldwell University softball senior Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J.) tossed a complete game in the opener as the Cougars swept a doubleheader against Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Caldwell took the opener 5-3 and completed the sweep with a 12-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
 
The Cougars improve to 8-7 on the season and 4-0 in the CACC, while the Wildcats fall to 11-10 and 1-3 in conference play.
 
Caldwell struck first in the opener as junior Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning. Wilmington rallied in their half of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
 
The Cougars answered in the fifth as senior Amy Hickman (Jackson, N.J.) reached base on an error. Freshman Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) doubled in Hickman to cut the score to 3-2. Junior Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) tied the game at 3-3 with a double to score Rini.
 
Caldwell took the lead in the sixth as Silva was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Lauren Frye (Jupiter, Fla.) singled to left and reached third on an error, while Silva scored the go-ahead run. Hickman provided the Cougars with an insurance run as she hit a sacrifice fly to score Frye.
 
Ponto (5-3) tossed her fifth complete game of the season as she struck out seven in the win. She allowed three unearned runs and three hits in the game.
 
Caldwell totaled 12 hits en-route to a 12-0 win in the nightcap. The Cougars scored six runs in the third and added six in the fifth. Rini put Caldwell in the lead in the third with a two-run single. Monasseri added a run scoring single in the inning, while freshman Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) drove in two runs with a single.
 
The Cougars tacked on six runs in the fifth as Johnston, Frye, and Rini drove in runs with singles in the inning. Hickman added a sacrifice fly as Caldwell took game two to remain unbeaten in conference play.
 
Johnston (2-2) evened her season record as she tossed five shutout innings and registered on strikeouts.  
 
The Cougars travel to Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday, March 26 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 10:30 am.
