Baseball Splits With Philadelphia to Open CACC Play

CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team opened up conference play with a doubleheader split against Philadelphia University. The Cougars took the opener 10-5, while the Rams won game two 3-0.

Caldwell moves to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Rams end the day at 5-12 and 3-3 in conference play.

Philadelphia got on the board first in the opening inning as they scored three runs off junior starter Joshua Caba (Belleville, N.J.). Caba settled down as he retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced.

Caldwell capitalized on a Philadelphia error in the fourth to get their first run of the game. The Rams added a run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars rallied back in the final two innings as they plated nine runs to take the lead. Caldwell took advantage of a Philadelphia error that extended the inning as the Cougars did their damage with two outs. Junior Paul Marinello (Freehold, N.J.) singled home two runs to cut the score to 4-3. Marinello stole second and scored on a single by senior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) that tied the score at 4-4.

Caldwell loaded the bases with two outs in the inning. Junior Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, N.Y.) drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single. The Cougars added to their lead with four runs in the eighth inning. Junior Daniel Gregor (Monroe, N.J.) singled home a run, while senior Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) ripped a two-run double. Bernstein added a sacrifice fly in the inning as Caldwell went ahead 10-4.

Philadelphia added a run in the ninth but senior Zach Endersby (Caldwell, N.J.) closed the door on the Rams. Caba (1-1) tossed seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out eight. Endersby pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out three.

In the nightcap, Caldwell was limited to two hits in the game. Senior Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, N.J.) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on 10 hits and struck out two to fall to 1-1.
