BLOOMFIELD, N.J.- The Caldwell University women's basketball team took sole possession of first place in the North Division as the Cougars defeated Bloomfield College 60-45 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the CACC, while the Bears fall to 2-7 and 2-1 in conference play.
Caldwell jumped out to an early lead as they built an 18-7 lead. Senior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) drained a triple and added a bucket to give the Cougars the advantage. Bloomfield connected on a late three-pointer as Caldwell lead 18-10 after the opening quarter.
The Bears closed to gap to one point at the 6:25 of the second quarter at 18-17. Caldwell closed out the half on a 9-3 run as senior
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) scored four points. Drogsler added a lay-up and a triple just before halftime as the Cougars led 27-20 the break.
Bloomfield rallied to start the second half as the cut the score down to 30-28 midway through the third quarter. Caldwell answered with a 12-0 run powered by eight points, including two triples, by sophomore
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.).
Senior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) capped the run with a lay-up at the 1:59 mark to put Caldwell in front 42-28. The Cougars extended their lead to as much as 19 points in the fourth quarter as they held a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Drogsler posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sanders also turned in a double-double effort with 16 points and 10 assists along with four rebounds and five steals. Lebron finished with eight points, while senior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) grabbed 10 boards.
The Cougars travel to Adelphi University on Saturday, December 16 for a non-conference game at 1:30 pm.
