ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior
Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.) dropped in 22 points as the Cougars came up short to Molloy College 63-61 on the first day of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament hosted by Dominican College.
The Cougars fall to 0-4 overall, while the Lions improve to 1-2.
Molloy jumped out to a 20-7 lead midway through the opening half. Caldwell battled back to close out the half. Dorn and sophomore
Ned Ogoemesim (Westampton, N.J.) each drained triple in the Caldwell rally. Sophomore
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) scored six points over the final eight minutes as the Cougars trailed 27-23 at halftime.
The Lions drained a three-pointer to start the second half but the Cougars rallied back with seven straight points. Lutterman and sophomore
AJ Kittles (Sicklerville, N.J.) each scored buckets in the run. Dorn converted a three-point play at the 16:55 mark to even the score at 30.
The teams traded leads over the next five minutes with Ogoemesim draining a jumper with 11:02 left in the game to put Caldwell in front 42-41. The Lions retook the lead as they pushed ahead by six points at 52-46 with 7:16 left in the game.
The Cougars battled back with seven straight points. Dorn connected on four free throws and added a trifecta at the 5:36 mark to give Caldwell a 53-52 lead. Molloy connected on three triples over the next three minutes to pull ahead 61-54 with just over two minutes left in the game.
Caldwell rallied back with six unanswered points to close the gap to 61-60 with just seconds left on the clock. Molloy drained a pair from the line with two seconds remaining to secure the win.
Dorn led the way with 22 points, two rebounds and two assists. Lutterman chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds, while Ogoemesim added nine points and seven boards. Freshman
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars return to the court on Saturday, November 18 as they take on The College of Saint Rose at the Daniel Sullivan Tournament hosted by Dominican College at 6 pm.
