CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University women's volleyball team defeated Bloomfield College 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Prior to the match, the Cougars honored a pair of breast cancer survivors.
The Cougars improve to 14-4 and 9-1 in the CACC, while the Bears fall to 5-13 and 4-6 in conference play.
The teams played a close first set as Bloomfield led 12-5 in the early going. Caldwell rallied to tie the score at 14 and the set went back and forth. Caldwell took the final two points to win the opening set 26-24. The Cougars controlled the second set as they won 25-14. Both teams held leads in the third set but Caldwell pulled away late to win the match 25-23.
Senior
Katrina Janssen (Seville, Australia) led the way with 17 kills, two aces, three blocks and six digs, while freshman
Chloe Kissner (Seabrook, Texas) chipped in nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore
Avery Stanechewski (Tampa, Fla.) added eight kills, while sophomore
Kathleen Compagno (Orland Park, Ill.) finished with seven kills.
Senior
Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, Hawaii) totaled seven kills and 10 digs, while senior
Jessica Mitchell (Plainfield, Ill.) tallied a match-high 21 digs. Senior
Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, Texas) netted 24 assists, while junior
Jordan Hoffman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted 22 assists.
Prior to the match, Caldwell Athletics recognized Caldwell University Nursing Professor Dr. Kathleen Kelley along with Linda Sheehan, mother of volleyball senior
Melissa Sheehan (Roselle Park, N.J.), as cancer survivors. Caldwell SAAC hosted a bake sale in the Newman Center lobby during the match with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Cougars travel to Holy Family University on Saturday, October 11 for a CACC clash at 5:30 pm.
