WILMINGTON, Del.- Senior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y.) tied a season-high with six triples as the Caldwell University women's basketball team used a fourth quarter comeback to defeat Goldey-Beacom College 70-66 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars improve to 11-3 overall and remain unbeaten in the CACC at 6-0. The Lightning fall to 9-7 and 4-2 in conference play.
Caldwell raced out to an early lead at 15-8 midway through the opening quarter. Pilla drained a pair of triples in the early going, while sophomore
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) added four points in the run.
Juniors
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) and
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) along with Lennon connected triples late in the quarter. Goldey-Beacom rallied back as they pulled even at 24 after the opening quarter.
The Cougars scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 30-24 lead at the 7:59 mark. The Lightning battled back as they tied the score at 36 with 2:33 left in the quarter. Goldey-Beacom pulled ahead just before halftime as the Cougars trailed by two at 40-38 at the break.
The Lightning led for most of the second half as they held a nine-point advantage six times over the final two quarters. Caldwell made their move over the final six and a half minutes when they trailed 64-55.
Kelty scored on a put back, while Pilla drained to triple to close the gap to four points. The Lightning answered with a bucket to go back up by six points at 66-60 at the 4:46 mark but it was their final point of the game.
Junior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) drained a triple at the 3:10 mark, while Kelty pulled the Cougars to within a point with a lay-up 35 seconds later. Lennon put Caldwell in front for good with a three-pointer with 2:08 remaining in the game. The teams traded possessions down the stretch but Pilla sealed the win with a pair of free throws with two seconds left.
Pilla shot 6-for-11 from downtown, totaling a game-high 20 points in the win. Lennon tallied 15 points and tied a career-high with seven assists. She set a new career mark with eight rebounds. Kelty chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds, while Sanders finished with 10 points, seven boards and five assists. Drogsler totaled eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Cougars are back at home on Saturday, January 7 as they host Holy Family University in a CACC contest at 1 pm at the Newman Center.
