WILMINGTON, Del.- Caldwell University men's basketball junior
Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.) netted 20 points in the Cougars 85-68 loss to Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars fall to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the CACC, while the Wildcats improve to 12-6 and 7-2 in conference play.
After trailing 8-5 in the first six minutes, Caldwell ripped off 10 straight points to take a 15-8 lead near the midway point of the first half. Freshman
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) scored four points to help Caldwell build a seven-point lead.
Wilmington chipped away as they pulled even at 25 with 2:56 left in the half. The Wildcats pushed ahead by three points but the Cougars evened the score at 30 following a triple by freshman
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.). The Wildcats took back the lead as they held a 34-33 advantage at halftime.
The Wildcats extended their lead to six points early in the second half. The Cougars rallied back to pull even at 39. Dorn netted a pair of baskets, while senior
Austin Woods (Milford, Conn.) scored in the paint at the 16:40 mark to tie the score.
Wilmington pushed ahead by 10 points at 53-43 with 12 minutes to play in the game. The Cougars closed the gap to eight points at 67-59 following an
AJ Kittles (Glassboro, N.J.) triple with 6:24 remaining in the game. Wilmington extended their lead back to double digits and led the rest of the way.
Dorn led the way with 20 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals. Covington shot 3-for-7 from downtown, totaling 13 points. Lutterman posted eight points and 11 boards, while freshman
Daan Vianen (Nieuwegein, Netherlands) chipped in eight points and three rebounds. Woods tallied six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
The Cougars return to action on Monday, January 16 as they host Post University in a CACC clash at 7:30 pm at the Newman Center.
