NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- Sophomore
Tom Yorston (Northamptonshire, United Kingdom) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Caldwell University men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 victory against Bentley University to wrap the Merrimack College Kickoff Classic. The Cougars earn their first win of the season as they even their record at 1-1, while the Falcons fall to 0-2.
The Cougars got on the board first as junior
Patrick Grey (Auckland, New Zealand) headed in a corner kick from sophomore
Kyle Hill (New Milford, N.J.) for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The Falcons knotted the game at 1-1 in the 33
rd minute as the teams headed into halftime tied.
The score remained tied until late in the second half when a flurry of goals occurred in a 2:15 span. Senior
Jakub Havlak (Prague, Czech Republic) put the Cougars in front at the 77:44 mark and less than a minute later, Caldwell got an own goal to give them a 3-1 lead.
Bentley rallied 12 seconds later as they cut the lead to 3-2. The Falcons pulled even just over a minute later at the 79:59 mark. The score stayed tied at 3-3 as the team headed to overtime.
Yorston sent the Cougars off with a win as he booted in the winning goal 1:20 into the first overtime off an assist from freshman
Darren Appanah (Enfield, England).
In net, junior
Fritz Meister (Flaach, Switzerland) played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves.
The Cougars travel to Molloy College on Tuesday, September 6 for a non-conference clash at 4 pm.
