Volleyball Rallies Past Chestnut Hill to Even Conference Record

CALDWELL, N.J.- Junior Katrina Janssen (Seville, Australia) led the Cougars with 15 kills as the Caldwell University volleyball team rallied past the Chestnut Hill College Griffins 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

The Cougars improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the CACC, while the Griffins drop to 4-9 and 2-3 in conference play.

In a back and forth opening set, Chestnut Hill edged the Cougars 25-23. The teams traded leads in the second set but the Cougars led late at 19-18. Caldwell netted the final six points to take set two 25-18. Chestnut took a 19-14 lead late in the third set but the Cougars ripped off 10 straight points, taking the win 25-20. Caldwell went up 7-2 in the fourth set but the Griffins battled back to tie the score at 8-8. The Cougars jumped back in front 16-11 and held on for a 25-22 win to take the match.

Janssen led the way with 15 kills along with four total blocks. Junior Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, Hawaii) chipped in 14 kills, two aces, two blocks and 19 digs.

Sophomore Jordan Hoffman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted five kills, 26 assists, two blocks and 15 digs, while junior Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, Texas) tallied 16 assists and five digs.

Freshman Avery Stanechewski (Tampa, Fla.) recorded seven kills and five blocks, while freshman Kathleen Compagno (Orland Park, Ill.) added six kills. Junior Jessica Mitchell (Plainfield, Ill.) finished with 28 digs and four aces, while junior Melissa Sheehan (Roselle Park, N.J.) netted 11 digs.

The Cougars host Concordia College on Monday, September 26 at 7 pm at the Newman Center.
