PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Sophomore
Italo Cardoso (Monroe, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal in double overtime to lead the Caldwell University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Philadelphia University in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener. The Cougars improve to 2-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the CACC, while the Rams fall to 0-2-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play.
The teams played a defensive first half as the Rams had two shots on goals to none for the Cougars. The game was scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play.
The scoring picked up in the second half as sophomore
Tom Yorston (Northamptonshire, United Kingdom) put the Cougars on the board in the 48th minute off an assist from freshman
Darren Appanah (Enfield, England).
The Rams answered in the 73rd minute as they tied the game at one to force overtime.
In the first overtime, the Rams outshot the Cougars 3-1 with two big saves by junior
Fritz Meister (Flaach, Switzerland) to preserve the tie game. Caldwell earned the win 1:16 into the second overtime as Cardoso came up with the game-winner off an assist from freshman
Erik Molin (Sundsvall, Sweden).
In net, Meister recorded seven saves in the victory.
The Cougars host Felician University in their home opener on Tuesday, September 13 at 4 pm at Caldwell Field.
