Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Wilmington

NEWARK, Del.- Junior Courtney Donlon (East Brunswick, NJ) netted three goals but the Caldwell University Women's Lacrosse team dropped their first conference game of the season with a 10-9 loss to Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. The Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while the Wildcats improve to 2-7 and 2-1 in conference play.
 
Sophomore Emily Fey (Center Moriches, NY) got the Cougars on the board at the 25:12 mark of the opening half. Wilmington answered with three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Pamela Schenck (East Moriches, NY) and freshman Maryellen McCarthy (Levittown, NY) rallied the Cougars back with a pair of goals to even the score at 3-3.
 
The teams traded goals as Fey netted her second of the game to keep the score tied at four. The Wildcats tacked on a pair of goals before the half as they led 6-4 at halftime.
 
Wilmington opened the second half with a pair of goals to push their lead to 8-4 in the first five minutes. Schenck tallied her second of the day to cut the scored to 8-5. Wilmington answered with a goal but the Cougars battled back with three unanswered goals. Donlon netted all three goals, including two man-up, to cut slice the score down to one goal at 9-8.
 
The Wildcats pushed ahead by two goals with a score at the 10:04 mark of the second half. Freshmen Rachel Lucia (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) got the Cougars back within a goal as she scored with 7:33 left in the game. The Cougars had a couple opportunities last including a free position shot with just seconds on the clock but failed to net the equalizer.
 
For Caldwell, Donlon led the Cougars with three goals, while Schenck and Fey chipped in two goals each. Sophomore Jessica Minuto (Levittown, NY) added a pair of assists in the game. Schenck led the team with four draw controls, while Lucia and sophomore Mariah Wynn (Clearwater, FL) totaled two each. In net, freshman Elizabeth Ruedemann (Monmouth Junction, NJ) played all 60 minutes, totaling 14 saves along with three groundballs. Lucia led the way with four groundballs, while Lucia and sophomore Catherine Ringhoff (East Moriches, NY) scooped up three groundballs.  
 
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, April 9 as they host Felician University in a CACC clash at noon at Essex Valley School Field in West Caldwell.
