Baseball Falls to Nyack in CACC Twin Bill

CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team fell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Nyack College 6-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

The Cougars fall to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the CACC, while the Warriors improve to 8-15 and 6-3 in the conference.

In the opener, Nyack plated three runs in the opening inning to take the early lead. The Cougars got a run back in their half of the first as sophomore Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ) lead off with a bunt single. Sophomore William Levier (Monroe Township, NJ) singled to move Marinello to third, junior Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to score the lone Caldwell run in the opener.

The Warriors added two runs in the fifth and one in the ninth, while the Cougars were limited to six hits in the game. Senior starter Job Gribbin (Westfield, NJ) tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and struck out one to fall to 2-2. Freshman Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, NJ) came on for the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and registered two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Warriors jumped out to an early advantage as they got a run in the first and added two more in the fourth inning. Caldwell got their runs in the sixth as junior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) tripled with two outs. Senior Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ) reached base on a dropped fly that allowed Bernstein to cross home. The Cougars loaded the bases as sophomores Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, NJ) and Alexander Lore (Staten Island, NY) reached base with singles. Orlando scored on a balk but the Cougars failed to plate the tying run.

Starter Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, NJ) went 8 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and struck out one to fall to 2-1. Sophomore Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, NJ) retired the lone batter he faced in a 1/3 of an inning.

The Cougars travel to Queens College for a non-conference clash on Wednesday, April 5 at 3 pm.
