DANBURY, Conn.- Junior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) went 4-for-9 with four RBI and four runs scored as the Caldwell University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Post University. The Eagles took the opener 7-5, while the Cougars earned the split with a 10-8 win in the nightcap.
The Cougars stand at 9-19 overall and 5-9 in the CACC, while the Eagles move to 12-26 and 6-10 in conference play.
In the opener, Post built a 7-0 lead over the first five innings. Caldwell chipped away in the seven as they loaded the bases. Sophomore
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ) drew a walk, while Rivera blasted a grand slam homerun to close the gap to 7-5.
Junior
Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, NJ) tossed four innings in a losing effort, allowing six runs on nine hits and struck out four. Freshman
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, NJ) came on for the final four innings, allowing one run on two hits.
In the nightcap, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead as they scored one run on an error. Sophomore
William Levier (Monroe Township, NJ) put Caldwell up 2-0 with an RBI single.
Post added three runs in the third and three in the fourth before the Cougars rallied. Caldwell plated a pair of runs following an Eagles' error in the fifth. Junior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) drove in a pair of runs with a single in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6.
Freshman
Mason Marino (Brooklyn, NY) had the key hit in the seventh with an RBI single to put Caldwell up 7-6. The Cougars added three more in the inning as Marinello had an RBI single. The Eagles got a pair of runs in the ninth but sophomore
Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, NJ) closed the door to give Caldwell a split.
Sophomore
Justin Picinic (River Vale, NJ) got the start, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and struck out four. Senior
Richard Evaniecki (Bloomfield, NJ) tossed two innings, allowing two hits and struck out two. Frascati (2-0) earned the win in relief, going three innings, allowing two runs on four hits and registered four strikeouts. Cerf allowed one hit as he recorded the final two out of the game.
The Cougars travel to USciences on Sunday, April 24 for a CACC doubleheader at noon. Â
