PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Caldwell University baseball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to USciences on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars fall to 9-21 and 5-11 in the CACC, while the Devils improve to 8-25 and 5-13 in conference play.
In the opener, Caldwell took an early lead with four runs in the opening inning. Junior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) and sophomore
Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, NJ) drove in runs with doubles, while sophomore
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY) singled in a run. Senior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
USciences got two back in the second inning but Orlando singled home a run in the third inning for a 5-2 lead. The Devils rallied with five runs in the fifth to take the lead and added four runs in the final two innings.
Senior
Jon Gribbin (Westfield, NJ) tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out one as he falls to 3-4 on the season. Senior
Richard Evaniecki (Bloomfield, NJ) allowed three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief work, while freshman
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, NJ) went 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
In the nightcap, the Devils jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening inning. Caldwell rallied with four runs in the second inning as Goldman and sophomore
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ) singled in runs. Senior
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ) doubled in a run, while sophomore
Joseph Peteya (Bloomfield, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to cut the score to 7-4.
Caldwell added a run in the sixth and one in the eighth to slice the score to 7-6. USciences tacked on four runs in the eighth to take the nightcap victory. Junior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game two.
Sophomore
Joshua Caba (Belleville, NJ) allowed six runs (five earned) as he failed to record an out to fall to 1-3 on the season. Sophomore
Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, NJ) tossed 7 1/3 innings in relief, allowing five runs on eight hits and struck out four.
The Cougars host Wilmington University on Tuesday, April 26 in a CACC doubleheader at 3 pm at the Kiwanis Oval. Â Â
