LAKEWOOD, N.J.- Freshman
Maryellen McCarthy (Levittown, NY) and sophomore
Pamela Schenck (East Moriches, NY) both netted four points each to help lead the Caldwell University Women's Lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory against Georgian Court University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. The win clinches the Cougars first-ever post season berth in the CACC Tournament.
The Cougars improve to 5-6 overall and 5-2 in the CACC, while the Lions fall to 3-10 and 3-3 in conference play.
It was a back and forth first half a Georgian Court scored a pair of early goals to take the lead. The Cougars rallied with three straight goals as sophomore
Mariah Wynn (Clearwater, FL) scored twice and sophomore
Emily Fey (Center Moriches, NY) added a goal to a 3-2 lead.
The Lions responded with three goals to retake the lead at 5-3 late in the half. Caldwell evened the score as freshman
Rachel Lucia (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) and sophomore
Daniela Costanzo (East Brunswick, NJ) netted goals 29 seconds apart to even the score at 5-5. Georgian Court netted a goal with under a minute to go to take a 6-5 lead but Schenck netted a goal with one second on the clock to tie the game at six going into halftime.
The Cougars' positive momentum spilled into the second half as they opened the final 30 minutes with four goals in the first six minutes. McCarthy and sophomore
Jessica Minuto (Levittown, NY) each totaled a goal and an assist, while Fey and Lucia added goals to take a 10-6 lead.
The Lions battles back as they scored four of the next five goals in the game to slice the score down to 11-10 with 11:41 left in the game. McCarthy scored off a Schenck assist to break the run. Schenck added an insurance goal with a tally at the 6:16 mark and Caldwell needed it as the Lions scored with 1:50 on the clock. The Cougars defense held strong as they forced a pair of turnovers to hold on a key conference victory.
For the Cougars, Schenck and McCarthy both finished with two goals and two assists in the win. Fey, Wynn and Lucia netted two goals each, Minuto added a goal and one assist. In net, freshman
Elizabeth Ruedemann (Monmouth Junction, NJ) recorded 10 saves in a win between the pipes.
The Cougars travel to Holy Family University on Tuesday, April 19 for a CACC clash at 4 pm.
