Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) went 3-for-6 with two RBI as the Caldwell University baseball team lost twice to the University of New Haven non-conference doubleheader. The Chargers took the opener 5-1 and won the nightcap 6-3.
The Cougars fall to 8-18 overall, while the Chargers improve to 13-12.
Bernstein went 2-for-3 in the opener and drove in the lone run in the sixth inning. Junior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) doubled with one out and scored on Bernstein's single.
Senior
Richard Evaniecki (Bloomfield, NJ) tossed a complete game, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out three to fall to 1-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Cougars took advantage of a pair of Charger errors in the opening inning to take an early lead. Bernstein doubled in Rivera, while a second run scored on an error as Caldwell led 2-0 after one inning.
New Haven rallied with four runs in the second and two in the fourth to lead 6-2. Sophomore
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ) singles and stole second with one out in the fifth inning and scored on a Rivera single.
On the mound, freshman
Anthony Tornatore (Fairfield, NJ) tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits as he falls to 0-3. Senior
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Â
