PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Sophomore
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ) blasted a pair of homeruns to help lead the #19 Caldwell University Softball team to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Chestnut Hill College. The Cougars took the opener 10-0 in six innings and 8-0 in five innings.
The Cougars are ranked #19 in this week's NFCA Division II National poll and in the first NCAA Division II East Region poll landed in the #2 spot. The Cougars improve to 22-10 overall and 15-3 in the CACC, while the Griffins fall to 11-33 and 8-12 in conference play.
Monasseri went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with two homeruns and seven RBI to pace the Cougar offense. Senior
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL) went 5-for-8 in the twin bill, including 4-for-4 in the opener.
Caldwell got a pair of strong pitching performances in the doubleheader as senior pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA) tossed five scoreless innings in game one. Padilla (12-2) struck out two and allowed four hits in the opening game victory. Freshman
Alexa Toner (Mt. Laurel, NJ) retired all three batters she faced in the sixth inning.
In the nightcap, junior pitcher
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ) earned her ninth victory of the season as she tossed four scoreless innings. Ponto (9-7) allowed two hits and struck out five in a game two victory. Toner allowed two hits and struck out one in one scoreless inning.
Caldwell returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 14 as they host Saint Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference doubleheader at 2:30 pm.
