BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- Senior
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA) blasted a three-run homerun in the opener as the Caldwell University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Pace University. The Cougars move to 10-8 overall, while the Setters stand at 9-6.
In the opener, the Cougars got on the board first in the third inning. Senior
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ) doubled in the first run of the game. Fryday singled in Reighn for a 2-0 Caldwell lead.
The Setters got a run back in their half of the third but the Cougars rallied in the fourth. Senior
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL) singled in one run, while Reighn ripped a two-double to push the Cougar lead to 5-1. Caldwell added a run in the fifth on an error and tacked on three more in the sixth. The Cougars got a pair of runner on base and Fryday blasted a three-run homerun to seal the deal in game one.
Reighn went 3-for-4 in the opener with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI, while McCready was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Fryday was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Senior hurler
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on eight hits and struck out four to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Caldwell got on the board in the opening inning of the nightcap as junior
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ) singled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and error. Hickman scored on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The Setters tied the game in their half of the first and added two more in the second. Pace tacked on a run in the fourth as the Cougars were limited to six hits in the game. Junior pitcher
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ) tossed a complete game, allowing four runs on four hits and struck out five to fall to 4-5.
The Cougars return to the field on Tuesday, March 29 as they host Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at 2:30 pm at Caldwell Field.
