LANTANA, Fla.- Freshman
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, NJ) tossed three scoreless innings in relief as the Caldwell University baseball team rallied past Florida Memorial University 3-2 to open their 2016 season with a victory. The Cougars improve to 1-0, while the Tigers fall to 4-17.
Florida Memorial struck early with single runs in the third and fourth inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) led off the sixth inning as he reached on a three-base error by the leftfielder. Junior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1.
Caldwell got the bats going in the eighth as senior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ) singled with one out and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Sophomore
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY) drew a walk to set up the game-deciding play. Sophomore
Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, NJ) tripled down the right field line to score both runners and put the Cougars in the lead to stay at 3-2.
Frascati (1-0) held the lead as he only allowed two base runners over the final two innings to earn his first collegiate victory. He struck out three and didn't allow a hit in his three innings of relief. Junior
Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, NJ) got the start on the mound, going six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out six.
Bernstein went 2-for-3 in the game, while senior
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ) collected two hits in five at-bats. Orlando finished the day at 2-for-4.
Caldwell continues their Florida trip as they square off against Bloomfield College on Friday, March 11 at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, FL at 7:30 pm.
