Jon Gribbin (Westfield, NJ) tossed eight strong innings, while junior
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) drove in four run to lead the Caldwell University baseball team to a 7-3 win against Bloomfield College on Friday night. The Cougars remain unbeaten at 2-0, while the Bears fall to 1-6.
The Bears struck in the opening inning as they took an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
In the fourth, junior
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ) led off with a double and later stole third. Senior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ) evened the game with a triple to tie the game at 1-1. The Cougars weren't finished as sophomore
Justin Jeannette (East Hanover, NJ) reached on an error that allowed Orlando to score to put Caldwell in front 2-1.
Caldwell capitalized on a pair of Bloomfield errors to put runners at second and third with one out. Following a strikeout, Bernstein came through with a clutch two-run single to extend the Cougar lead to 4-1 after five innings.
Bloomfield got a run back in the sixth but the Cougars tacked on one in the seventh. Bernstein drove in his fourth run of the night to put Caldwell ahead 5-2. The Bears matched Caldwell with a solo homerun in the sixth but the Cougars added two in the eighth. Senior
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ) and sophomore
William Levier (Monroe Township, NJ) both had run scoring singles to push the score to 7-3.
Gribbin (1-0) tossed eight innings in his season debut, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out 10. Junior
Sagar Patel (Parsippany, NJ) tossed a scoreless ninth, registering one strikeout.
Caldwell continues their Florida trip as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, March 12 at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, FL at noon.
