Men’s Basketball Outlasts Dominican to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University men's basketball junior Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.) netted a team-high 22 points to help lead the Cougars to a 79-66 victory against Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
 
The Cougars improve to 6-2 overall and remain unbeaten in CACC play at 3-0. The Chargers drop to 5-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
 
The teams traded leads from the opening tip but the Cougars seized the advantage as they pulled ahead. Caldwell netted 10 field goals in the opening half but held a lead in part to shooting 14-of-19 from the charity stripe in the opening half.
 
Senior Austin Woods (Milford, Conn.) hit all four from the line in the half coupled with seven rebounds that gave Caldwell a seven-point halftime lead. Sophomore Ahmad Harrison (Newark, N.J.) drained a triple at the buzzer as the Cougars headed to the break in the lead at 36-29.
 
Caldwell got off to a fast start in the second half as they extended their lead to 11 points at 42-31 at the 17:19 mark. The Chargers rallied as they closed the gap to four points at 48-44 near the midway point of the half.
 
The Cougars answered as they pushed their lead into double digits with 8:44 remaining in the game with a 10-3 run. Senior Christian Ejiga (Laconia, N.H.) netted five points, including a three-point play, while freshman AJ Kittles (Glassboro, N.J.) capped the run with a triple for a 58-47 lead.
 
The teams traded points over the next five minutes but the Chargers trimmed the score down to five points late in the game at 69-64. Caldwell headed to the free throw line down the stretch as Dorn hit 6-of-6 to push their lead into double figures and the Cougars took the win.
 
Dorn's 22 points led the way in the win, while Woods posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kittles drained 3-of-3 from long range, finishing with 15 points. Freshman Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) totaled 10 points and two blocks, while Ejiga chipped in eight points, three rebounds and two blocks. Harrison netted seven points, three rebounds and three assists, while freshman Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa.) chipped in seven points and five boards.
 
The Cougars travel to Post University on Monday, December 5 for a CACC clash against the Eagles at 7:30 pm.
