Women’s Basketball Falls in Road Contest to Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y.- Junior Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) netted 19 points as the Caldwell University women's basketball team fell to Queens College 73-63 in a road non-conference contest.
 
The Cougars suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 3-1, while the Knights improve to 4-0.
 
Queens took a 10-4 lead halfway through the opening quarter. Junior Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) cut the score in half with a three-point play at the 4:55 mark. The Knights took a 15-point lead late in the quarter but three-pointer by senior Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y.) along with a three-point play by junior Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) closed the gap to 26-17 after one quarter.
 
Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter as Queens shot 14.3%, while the Cougars shot 22.2% in the frame. Caldwell held the edge in points 12-6 as they cut the score down to three points at 32-29 at the break.
 
The Knights extended their lead to as much as 12 points at 48-36 with 2:58 led in the third quarter. Drogsler netted a triple and a pair of lay-ups as Caldwell trimmed their deficit down to eight points at 52-44 heading into the final quarter.
 
Sophomore Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) scored for the Cougars early in the fourth quarter to cut the score down to six points at 52-46. Queens score a minute later to go back up eight points and kept the Cougars at bay the rest of the way. The Knights held at least a seven points lead down the stretch to secure the win.
 
Drogsler shot 2-for-4 from downtown, finishing with 20 points and four rebounds. Sanders tallied 19 points (2-for-4 from three), three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Junior Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) netted seven points and four rebounds, while O'Driscoll added seven points and seven boards.
 
The Cougars host Nyack College in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and home opener on Tuesday, November 22 at 5:30 pm at the Newman Center.
