Jakub Havlak (Prague, Czech Republic) scored in the waning seconds but the Caldwell University men's soccer team came up short to Goldey-Beacom College 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.
The Cougars fall to 5-7-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the CACC, while the Lightning improve to 9-4-1 and 6-2-1 in conference play.
Caldwell outshot the Lightning in the opening half 6-4 but the score remained tied at 0-0 until the final seconds. Goldey-Beacom took the halftime lead with 31 seconds left in the first half to jump out in front.
The second half also saw late scoring as the Lightning held a 1-0 advantage into the final minutes of regulation. Goldey-Beacom chipped in a goal to push ahead 2-0 in the 86th minute.
The Cougars got their goal in the final minute as Caldwell was awarded a penalty kick with 56 seconds left in the game. Havlak booted the penalty shot past the keeper to cut the score to 2-1. Caldwell was unable to find the equalizer in the final seconds.
Caldwell held the edge in corner kicks 4-2 but the Lightning finished with the overall shot advantage 14-9 and shots on goal 5-4. Junior goal keeper
Fritz Meister (Flaach, Switzerland) recorded three saves in 90 minutes in net.
The Cougars host Nyack College on Wednesday, October 19 in a CACC match at 3 pm.
