CALDWELL, N.J.- Sophomore
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, NY) posted her second straight double-double as the Caldwell University women's basketball team used a second half surge to pull away from Dominican College 83-70 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars improve to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in the CACC, while the Chargers fall to 9-9 and 5-4 in conference play.
The teams battled through a close first half of play that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes. The score went back and forth in an exciting opening quarter as a Dominican triple at the buzzer gave the Chargers a 23-20 lead. Both teams held four point leads in the second quarter as the teams traded leads twice with four ties in the frame. The Chargers again hit a late jumper with under a minute to play to go ahead 39-37 at halftime.
The Cougars found their shooting touch in the third quarter to take control of the game. Caldwell opened the second half on a 12-4 run, powered by a pair of three-pointers by senior
Nicole Angelo (Mt Laurel, NJ) and junior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY) The Chargers battled back to tie the score for the 12th and final time at 57 with 2:16 left in the quarter.
Caldwell pulled away as they used a 23-5 run that stretched from the 1:58 mark of the third quarter to the 2:39 mark of the fourth quarter. Sophomores
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, MA) and
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA) each netted six points, while Angelo connected on a triple in the run as the Cougars built an 18 point lead at 80-62. Caldwell maintained a lead to the final buzzer to take the win in a pivotal North Division game.
For the Cougars, Drogsler led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds along with three assists, while Pilla went 3-for-5 from downtown for 17 points. O'Driscoll chipped in 14 points and four boards, while Angelo posted 12 points and four assists. Freshman
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, NJ) totaled four assists and three steals, while Sanders tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Due to the impending snow storm this weekend, the Cougars will travel to Georgian Court University on Friday, January 22 for a 5 pm tip.
