Caldwell Softball Defeats Chestnut Hill Twice

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University softball team beat Chestnut Hill University, 13-1 and 11-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who are ranked 18th in the latest NFCA Top 25 Poll, are now 27-11-1 overall and 20-2 in the conference, while the Griffins fall to 9-27, 7-19 CACC.

Caldwell scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1, getting RBI singles from junior Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) and freshman Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.), and a bases-loaded walk from sophomore Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter). After Chestnut Hill scored an unearned run in the top of the second, the Cougars scored seven times to lead 11-1. Senior Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) hit a two-run triple, freshman Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) blasted a two-run home run, and sophomore Gracie Sullivan (Elmhurst, IL/York) hit a three-run homer in the inning. Junior Rachel Berzak (Cypress, CA/Pacifica) plated two runs in the third with a double to close out the scoring.

Junior pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) allowed an unearned run on one hit, while senior Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pitched two scoreless innings. Reighn and Craker both went 3-for-3 with three runs.

Caldwell put Game 2 out of reach early with nine runs in the first inning. Monasseri hit a two-run double, junior Katelyn Biasi (Blackwood, NJ/Sterling) drove in two runs with a single, and senior Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) belted a three-run home run to center field. Knorr's home run was the 253rd hit of her career, tying her with All-American Kim Mahoney '02 for the school record for career hits. Reigh and Craker also had RBIs in the inning. The Cougars added two more runs in the third for an 11-0 lead.

Knorr went 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs, while Reighn was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) gave up just one hit in three innings, with Almasy pitching two hitless innings of relief.

The Cougars host Georgian Court University in a CACC doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 26. The games are the final home games for three Caldwell seniors. The first game begins at 12:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
