CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) became the program's all-time leader in hits as the Caldwell University softball team defeated Georgian Court University, 11-0 and 9-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the wins, the Cougars (29-11-1) capture the CACC regular-season title with a 22-2 record in league play. The Lions fall to 14-30, 13-13 CACC.
This is the second year in a row that Caldwell has finished first atop the CACC standings, following last season's 24-2 squad. The Cougars will be the No. 1 seed at the CACC Tournament, which begins Thursday, Apr. 30 at Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J.
Knorr led off the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 with a single up the middle, giving her 254 hits in her career. She passes All-American
Kim Mahoney, who had 253 hits for the Cougars from 1998 to 2001. Freshman
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) put Caldwell on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the second inning. Then in the fourth, the Cougars scored nine runs on seven hits to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Knorr delivered a three-run double and junior
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) blasted a three-run home run in the inning. Freshman
Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) hit a two-run double, and sophomore
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) had a sacrifice fly.
Junior
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) blanked the Lions on two hits over four innings to improve to 14-5. Senior
Sarah Almasy (Sterling, NJ/Stratford) pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Knorr, Monasseri, Hickman, Silva and senior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) had two hits apiece for Caldwell.
In the second game, sophomore
Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 Caldwell advantage. Reighn hit a triple in the third and came home on a double by Calderon to lead 3-0. After Georgian Court scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth, junior
Katelyn Biasi (Blackwood, NJ/Stratford) doubled in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a single by Knorr for a 4-1 edge. Caldwell clinched the victory and the sweep with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Monasseri hit a two-run double and Hickman blasted her first home run as a Cougar, a two-run shot to centerfield.
Hickman, Knorr and Calderon each had two hits. Sophomore pitcher
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) limited the Lions to an unearned run on four hits over five innings. Ponto has not lost to a CACC opponent this season, going a perfect 10-0 in conference games.
The sweep also marked the final home games for seniors Almasy, Calderon and Knorr, who were honored along with injured shortstop
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) before the games.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season with a CACC doubleheader at Concordia College on Monday, Apr. 27. The first game begins at 2:30 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
