Caldwell Falls to Dominican in Baseball

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Dominican College, 13-4 Friday night at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars are now 11-23 overall, while the Chargers improve to 17-20.

Dominican broke open a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) led off with a triple and came home on a single by freshman Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) for Caldwell's first run. Later in the inning, a grounder by freshman William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) brought home Bernstein to make the score 6-2. The Chargers answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to lead 9-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Caldwell scored twice on a sacrifice fly from Rivera and an error to make the score 9-4. Dominican scored four times in the ninth as the Chargers beat the Cougars for the third time this season. Rivera led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI.

The game marked the final home contest for eight seniors: Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall), Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon), Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.), Ryan Langdon (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr), Joseph Saverino (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep), Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial).
