WILMINGTON, Del. – The Caldwell University softball team earned a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep of Goldey-Beacom College, 6-0 and 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Jackson Complex. The Cougars are now 24-11-1 overall and 17-2 in the conference, while the Lightning drops to 4-25-1, 2-20 CACC.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking four to lead Caldwell to a 6-0 victory. Senior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) hit a two-run double in the third and an RBI single in the fifth, while freshmen
Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) and
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) singled in runs in the win. Senior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) also hit a sacrifice fly that plated sophomore
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) in the sixth.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the top of the first in Game 2, getting a double from Craker that scored junior
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) and an RBI single from Monasseri for a 2-0 lead. Goldey-Beacom scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to make the score 2-1. Caldwell was able to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a single by junior
Katelyn Biasi (Blackwood, NJ/Sterling) that brought home Craker.
Senior
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) held the Lightning to an unearned run on three hits while fanning six and walking one in seven innings for the win. Knorr and Hickman each had two hits in Game 2.
The Cougars host Georgian Court University in a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 22, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
