CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Post University, winning the first game, 2-1 and losing Game 2, 4-1 Thursday at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars are now 3-16 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Eagles are 9-12, 5-3 CACC.
The first game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth, when Dylan Pastor hit a solo home run for a 1-0 Post lead. In the bottom of the eighth, freshman
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) hit a two-out double, then scored on a single by freshman
William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) to tie the game at 1-1. The game went into the 10th inning still tied at 1-1. In the top of the 10th, freshmen
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) and
Noah Clark (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) hit back-to-back singles with one out. Marinello followed with a single to deep left field, scoring Goldman for the walk-off victory.
Senior
Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) started on the mound and limited the Eagles to one run on seven hits while striking out 10 in nine innings. Senior
Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) pitched one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win. The victory snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Cougars.
Runs were hard to come by in the second game as well, with the teams each scoring one run over the first five innings. Post struck first with a run in the top of the second, only to have the Cougars answer in the bottom of the second. Marinello laced a double down the left field line to plate Levier from first and tie the score at 1-1. The Eagles were able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and add two more runs in the eight for a 4-1 win.
Senior
Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall) pitched a solid game, giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits through 7 2/3 innings. Goldman had two hits to lead the Cougar bats.
Caldwell hosts the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 7, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
