UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Caldwell University baseball team lost a non-conference game at Molloy College, 20-9 Tuesday afternoon at Mitchell Field. The Cougars are now 2-14, while the Lions improve to 10-12. This is the third game between the two teams this season, as the teams split a pair of games in Florida.
Caldwell started quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior
Anthony Caruso (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) doubled to score senior
Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) and sophomore
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph), and junior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ/Holmdel) came home on a wild pitch. After the Lions scored twice in the bottom of the first, freshman
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) plated Mangarella with a single and freshman
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second for a 5-2 lead.
Molloy came back in a big way, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second and six runs in the third to take a commanding 13-5 advantage. In the top of the fourth, Goldman and Marinello hit RBI singles and Rivera tripled home Goldman and junior
Richard Evaniecki (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) to make the score 13-9. But the Lions scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and held the Cougars scoreless the rest of the way.
Goldman and Orlando each had two hits to lead Caldwell. Jack McCarty went 4-for-5 with four runs, a triple and three RBIs to lead Molloy.
Caldwell plays another non-conference game at Mercy College on Wednesday, Apr. 1, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
