BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Caldwell University baseball team fell to Molloy College, 15-5 in a non-league game Sunday afternoon at Lynn University's University Field. The Cougars drop to 1-2 with the loss, while the Lions improve to 4-6.
After Molloy scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, Caldwell tied the score in the top of the second when freshmen
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) and
Charles Grade (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) came home on wild pitches. In the bottom of the second, the Lions scored three times, buoyed by triples from Anthony Alberghina and Ronald Bauer. Again the Cougars answered, as Grade belted a double down the right field line with the bases loaded, scoring all three runners to tie the score at 5-5.
But Molloy regained momentum and the lead, scoring 10 runs over the next five innings, including a four-run fourth inning, to put the game out of reach. Caldwell managed just three hits after the third inning, as the Lions closed out the win. Bauer pitched six innings and allowed four hits and five runs while walking six, keeping the Cougars off balance. Marinello finished with two hits and two runs to lead the Cougar bats.
Caldwell continues play at the Palm Beach Challenge with a game at Lynn University on Monday, Mar. 16, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
