BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite a late comeback attempt, the Caldwell University baseball team lost a non-conference game to No. 19 Lynn University, 9-5 Monday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field. The Cougars are now 1-3 on the season, while the Fighting Knights improve to 18-5.
Lynn scored three runs apiece in the second and fourth innings and added another in the fifth. A two-run single by John Borup in the eighth made the score 9-0. Caldwell didn't get on the scoreboard until the top of the ninth, when sophomore
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) singled home freshman
Charles Grade (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights). Junior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ/Holmdel) followed with a three-run double to make the score 9-4 Lynn. After freshman
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) moved Orlando to third with a single, freshman
William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) singled for the Cougars' fifth run of the inning. But reliever Ryan Caballero ended the comeback by retiring the next two batters.
Goldman and Levier each had three hits, with Levier going 3-for-3. Freshman pitcher
Justin Picinic (River Vale, NJ/St. Joseph) started on the mound, allowing seven runs in five innings.
The Cougars continue their Florida trip with games against Molloy College and the University of New Haven on Tuesday, Mar. 17.
