LANTANA, Fla. – The Caldwell University baseball team lost a non-league game to Bloomfield College, 5-3 at the Palm Beach Challenge Saturday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The Cougars, who beat the Bears (1-5) on Thursday, are now 1-1 on the season.
Bloomfield broke a scoreless tie with three runs on five hits in the top of the third to lead 3-0. The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, freshman
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) hit a sacrifice fly that plated sophomore
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner). Later in the inning, junior
Richard Evaniecki (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) singled through the left side to bring home freshman
Noah Clark (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East).
Although they left the bases loaded in the sixth, the Cougars would score the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out double by junior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ/Holmdel) that brought home Bernstein. But the Bears scored twice on an error in the eighth inning and kept Caldwell off the scoreboard the rest of the way to close out the win.
Orlando and freshman
William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) each had two hits for the Cougars. Senior right-hander
Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) started and gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. Bloomfield's Francesco Scudeiro pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.
Caldwell continues play at the Palm Beach Challenge with a game against Molloy College on Sunday, Mar. 15. The first pitch is at 12:00 p.m. at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
