Cougars Earn Key CACC Win Over Holy Family in Women’s Hoops, 71-53

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University women's basketball team used tough defense to spark a key second-half run in a 71-53 triumph over Holy Family University Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win gives the Cougars (13-10) a 10-4 record in the conference, while the Tigers fall to 13-9, 10-4 CACC.

Holy Family broke open a close game with a 7-0 run for a 30-23 lead with 3:26 on the clock. A conventional three-point play by Kelly Giedemann later in the half pushed the lead to nine, 36-27. Caldwell answered with a basket by freshman guard Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA/St. Mary's) and a three-point play from junior forward Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) that made the halftime score 36-32 Tigers. Rovatsos led all players with nine points in the first half.

The Cougars tightened up the defense to start the second half, limiting Holy Family to 1-of-13 shooting from the field in an 18-2 run that put Caldwell up for good, 50-38 with 10:41 remaining. Freshman guard Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, NY/Christ the King) hit a three and had four points in the run. The lead grew to as many as 19 points, with Holy Family never coming closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Cougars shot 44.7 percent from the field after halftime while holding the Tigers to 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) shooting in the second half.

Drogsler buried four threes in seven attempts from beyond the arc to finish with a game-high 17 points. Freshman forward Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, MA/Sharon) scored 12 points, with Sanders adding 10 points. Senior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with eight points and three steals, with senior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) delivering 10 assists. Coscia was honored before the game for recording her 500th career assist last week.

Abigail Iannotti led Holy Family with nine points, while Sarah Pawlak and Kasey Woetzel had nine rebounds apiece.

Caldwell plays a CACC road game at Post University on Tuesday, Feb. 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
